feminist creativity observatory

The project presented here is an attempt to start to think about a Feminist Creativity Observatory. With this presentation, we wish to clarify that the idea of an Observatory is undoubtedly not the most adequate concept but is a valid starting point for us to start thinking about the project.

Both in their practical and theoretical proposals, feminist movements offer different ways of dealing with the subject of creativity. From the very moment in which they set out to change the circumstances under which they find themselves, feminist groups have proposed elements of creativity and creative practices.

The Feminist Creativity Observatory would focus on research and finding a common ground. It would seek to be a meeting point and a workplace for different tasks and projects: the personal efforts of the staff of contemporary arts centres over a period of many years; the work done jointly by feminist groups and artists; the academic research carried out at a theoretical and methodological level; the experience feminist movements.

The Feminist Creativity Observatory seeks to promote work done jointly using creative tools at different levels: theoretical level, methodological level, symbolic level, aesthetic level, political level. As well as the interactions that exist between these tools. In this way, one of the most important functions of the Observatory would be to develop new tools for artistic creation. These tools will be proposed to researchers, politicians, teachers, artists and culture specialists. These tools will be used for example in order to criticise art from a feminist viewpoint, to rewrite the history of creativity and to recognise the transforming efforts of feminist demands.

During the first stage, the Observatory will operate in the form of a seminar. People from the art world, academics and representatives of the organised feminist movement will be invited and the relevance of the relations between their projects will be highlighted and possible collaborations will be discussed.

The aim of the seminars is to provide a meeting point between feminist methodologies, artistic practices influenced by feminist ideologies and the challenges proposed by the feminist movement.

Today, it is difficult for the methodologies developed by feminist researchers to interpret and influence our environment in an original manner without taking into consideration the new visual proposals of a number of different artists. On the other hand, the visual forms themselves propose new processes of knowledge; and these contribute to academic knowledge and even modify the process of knowledge.

By posing its challenges, the feminist movement also relates more closely to visual forms produced by artists. In this way, meetings between these three worlds are essential.

With these seminars, the intention is to encourage the collaboration between these three worlds.
