publication / feminist perspectives in art productions and theories of art

  1. This publication will set out the subjects dealt with in the Feminist perspectives in art productions and theories of art course, co-directed by Xabier Arakistain, curator and art critic, and Lourdes Méndez, Professor of Art Anthropology, which will take place from October 24 to 26, 2014 at the Alhóndiga Bilbao. This publication will provide the public at large with a series of previously unpublished texts dealing with the art world from a feminist perspective. This publication, in trilingual version (Basque, Spanish and English), contributes to offset the insufficient number of texts in Basque on these matters, provides the Basque Country with an insight into the work of foreign artists and facilitates the distribution of national artists in international contexts.

feminist perspectives in art productions and theories of art course

The main aim of this course is to contribute to the dissemination of critical knowledge which, from a feminist perspective, analyses fields of artistic production in contemporary societies, revealing their sexist structures; analysing the effect on these of sex, ethnicity, race, social classes; and placing artists in the network of sexual social relationships in order to gain a better understanding of the reason for its unequal social recognition.

Structured in two blocks, the course tackles both theoretical and political problems confronted by feminist researchers in order to continue to construct non-sexist knowledge, such as those artistic practices that question the different dimensions of the “art” institution, concentrating on criticism from hegemonic representations of the sexual difference.
